Construction begins on USF’s $11.7 million residence hall
July 7, 2016
On July 7, 2016, construction began on the University of Sioux Falls’ $11.7 million, 188-bed residence hall in the northeast corner of campus.
To create space for the new facility and accommodate increased parking, USF will raze Patterson Hall and move several homes the institution owns. The residence hall is projected to open in fall 2017.
“The University of Sioux Falls’ land investments have provided a healthy return which we are investing back into our greatest strength: our students and their on-campus experience,” said President Mark Benedetto. “This is the first phase of a long-term campus improvement plan.”
According to Corey Ross, vice president of student development and dean of students, experience as well as research over the past 30 years demonstrates that there is power in the campus experience. Students living on campus are more likely to persist to degree completion, they participate at a higher level in the life of the campus, and they even engage in service to the community at an increased rate.
“People tell us all the time, ‘There’s a different feeling here at USF,’” said Ross. “The buildings and spaces lay the foundation and create the atmosphere for so many developmental functions on campus. They support the spiritual and intellectual growth of the entire campus community, as well as the creation of lifelong friendships.”
Designed by Koch Hazard Architects, plans for the new residence hall include the following:
- Three floors
- Two rooms with double beds separated by a private bath
- Student-centered common areas on each floor which include study spaces, lounge areas and kitchen facilities, as well as a fitness room, laundry room and theater for the residents to share
The University of Sioux Falls is dedicated to improving the on-campus experience for students and is committed to enhancing and supporting the city of Sioux Falls by providing quality facilities and using local contractors, including Koch Hazard Architects and Sioux Falls Construction.
