Twenty-one USF students inducted into Alpha Chi National College Honor Society

Twenty-one USF students were inducted into the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society on Thursday, May 3.

Alpha Chi is a co-educational society with the purpose of promoting academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and honoring those who achieve such distinction. The organization only accepts students who place in the Top 10 percent of their class from all academic disciplines.

In addition to acknowledging exemplary scholarship, service and character, Alpha Chi annually awards $166,000 for scholarships, grants and travel for outstanding undergraduate and graduate studies.

Membership in Alpha Chi recognizes previous accomplishments and provides opportunity for continued growth and service. Inductees are invited to join the society because of their scholarship, character and dedication to worthy goals. They have been nominated and identified by their advisors and faculty instructors as progressing toward the ideals of Alpha Chi: truth and knowledge.

Alpha Chi National College Honor Society has been in existence since 1922—nearly 100 years—and the South Dakota chapter founded at USF (then named Sioux Falls College) in the spring of 1962 is over 50 years old. Over 300 chapters at colleges and universities across the nation exist and induct approximately 11,000 members annually.

At USF, this society is supported to have a positive influence beyond those directly involved participants and to the student body as a whole. The society presents learning opportunities and cultural experiences not traditionally part of a defined academic major. It incorporates students who have appreciation for the academic community and maintain it through their leadership and service. These scholars help USF move toward fulfilling its potential as an academically challenging and supportive Christian institution.
