English Secondary Education Certification

If you have a passion for reading and writing and a desire to serve others through teaching, an English Secondary Education Certification from USF will prepare you for meaningful service in the classroom. Through this program, you will learn a variety of skills and methodologies that will enable you to teach literature, grammar, reading and oral communication to grades 7-12.

English Education combines both the English major and Education major. For this major, you must complete a minimum of 31 semester hours of English courses, 6 semester hours of a foreign language, 6 semester hours of oral communication and the courses required for secondary education certification.

REQUIRED MAJOR CORE

Complete the following courses:

  • - Introduction to English Studies (3 s.h.)
  • - Literature for Children & Adolescents (3 s.h.)
  • - Advanced Grammar (3 s.h.)
  • - Advanced Composition (3 s.h.)
  • - Evolving Canons (3 s.h.)
  • - Digital Humanities & the Ethics of Technology (3 s.h.)
  • - English Colloquium (1 s.h.)

SURVEY COURSES

Complete three of the following courses:

  • - British Literature: Origins and Intersections (3 s.h.)
  • - American Literature: Survey I (3 s.h.)
  • - British Literature: Survey II (3 s.h.)
  • - American Literature: Survey II (3 s.h.)

ELECTIVE(S) IN MAJOR

Complete 15 s.h. of elective courses. ENG311 and ENG322 are both highly recommended.
